Video: Friday After Next is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. So true lovers of the series may want to buy it, but if you're a causal newcomer to this trilogy, then you'll definitely want to rent it first. This release comes with a nice collection of special features, and a decent video transfer and soundtrack. Those who liked the first two Friday movies will most likely enjoy Friday After Next, though probably not nearly as much. Williams brings the fresh comedic timing that Mike Epps brought to the second instalment, Next Friday. The sole bright side to this movie is newcomer Katt Williams who plays Money Mike, new owner of the clothing store called Pimps & Hoes. And in an even bigger surprise, John Witherspoon, who is hilarious in Friday, takes his comedy to an unfunny physical level that comes across as desperate. Mike Epps, who was very entertaining in Next Friday, goes way over the top in his role here. Here, everyone is constantly trying to outdo the other, so it just becomes too much to handle. What made the first Friday so good was the understated acting from the cast. I think this is the reason why, because they're easier to control.Īnyway, subtlety gets thrown out the window in Friday After Next. ![]() Cube mentions that he likes to hire first-time directors. After all, Cube funded the movie so I don't blame Raboy for stepping aside. This was his first major feature film, and since Ice Cube produced and stared in it, Raboy just didn't want to make any waves. But after watching several of the special featurettes on this disc, I got a feeling for why he did this. It was clear watching the movie that he over-directed, what with all the needless slapstick humor that padded this film. I think part of the problem comes from newcomer director Marcus Raboy. Yeah, there are some funny new characters, well one funny new character. After all, nobody expected it to have come this far, but I think if he's going to front all his money for a major motion picture release, he should at least make the script good. Now I don't blame Ice Cube for trying to keep this series alive. Blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada, my brain hurts trying to explain this plot. They meet some interesting characters along the way, some funny and some just stupid. ![]() ![]() Naturally the two get into trouble on their first day on the job, and needless to say they don't finish the shift still employed. So the two must take temporary jobs as security guards at a local mini-mall to keep from being evicted. Early Christmas Eve they are robbed by a drunk Santa Claus who among other things, steals Craig and Day-Day's rent money. The dynamic duo are now roommates in a ghetto apartment development called Shady Palms. The movie definitely has its funny moments, but overall it's just a bunch of slapstick drivel that looks like it's trying overly hard to make people laugh.Ĭraig (Ice Cube) and his moronic cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) return for another unusually chaotic Friday, only this time it's the day before Christmas, and not surprisingly, the day isn't full of cheer. Well, I think this movie might have killed the series once and for all. So given this trend I should at least like Ice Cube's third installment, Friday After Next. And I really liked the sequel, Next Friday, even though it was sillier and had a less meaningful plot. I admit I am one of those guys' who can recite almost the entire movie word for word. Ice Cube's production company, Cube Vision, is kickin' it hard for round three boyeee! Now I absolutely loved the first Friday. ![]() ![]() ![]() My condolences to his family, and to Poland on this huge loss to the musical world.” Penderecki was the greatest - a fiercely creative composer, and a gentle, warm-hearted man. Greenwood tweeted Sunday to say “What sad news to wake to. Penderecki said at the time that Greenwood is a “very interesting composer” and that working with the guitarist made him see his own music from a new perspective. “Because of the complexity of what’s happening - particularly in pieces such as ‘Threnody’ and ‘Polymorphia,’ and how the sounds are bouncing around the concert hall, it becomes a very beautiful experience when you’re there,” Greenwood said in a 2012 interview with The Guardian. In 1980, the leader of Poland’s Solidarity freedom movement, Lech Walesa, called him and commissioned a short piece that would honor Poles who lost their lives fighting the communist regime. His second opera, “Paradise Lost,” based on the John Milton poem, seemed to reconcile him with the Catholic Church, and in 1979, he conducted a concert at the Vatican for Polish-born Pope John Paul II. In 1967 he composed a major choral work, “Dies Irae,” known also as the “Auschwitz Oratorio,” in homage to the Holocaust victims. In the 1970s, believing that avant-garde had been explored to the full, Penderecki embarked on a new path, writing music that, to many, sounds romantic and has the traditional forms of symphonies, concertos, choral works and operas. Written for 52 string instruments, it can be described as a massive plaintive scream. ![]() His 1960 “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima” won him a UNESCO prize. He was largely inspired by electronic instruments at the Polish Radio Experimental Studio, which opened in Warsaw in 1957 and was where he composed. In the late 1950s and the 1960s, Penderecki experimented with avant-garde forms and sound, technique and unconventional instruments, using magnetic tape and even typewriters. ![]() He would go on to win many awards, including multiple Grammys, but the first prize he won was especially precious: It took him to a music course in Germany, at a time when Poland was behind the Iron Curtain and Poles couldn’t freely travel abroad. ![]() ![]() So, he started his own, determined to make it easily accessible to everyone. He didn’t understand what questionnaires asking about the name of his cat or his grandparents’ political affiliations had to do with wanting to access a BBS, and got tired of waiting in line for over-capacity systems to open up a new caller slot. Owners of adult-themed BBSes, like the Virginia Beach-based Pleasure Dome, made new callers pick up the phone and verify their ages verbally if they sounded too young, the administrator would make them come to his office in person to show ID.Īll of this rigamarole frustrated Rusty. Many sysops tried to throttle the demand on their servers by making new callers answer absurd questionnaires, or call them on the phone before giving them login credentials. Some were hesitant to charge callers for subscriptions, for fear of being seen as sellouts or greedy capitalists, or monetizing what was meant to be a fun hobby. ![]() Most systems operators were hobbyist tech nerds, like Rusty himself, running boards out of their living rooms and paying the cost of electricity, hardware, and internet service out of pocket. “I was so excited! It was a great moment!”īut in this new world of endless potential, he soon ran into limits. He dialed in to his local BBS that night. “Now at least I could have millions of programs, and all free!” the archived piece says. He downloaded PC-TALK, one of the earliest pieces of shareware, to access his local BBSes. In ironic foreshadowing for his own fate, according to this account, Rusty seemed most excited about the concept of “shareware,” software made to be swapped between users for free (or a small copying fee). I also went for the best color graphics-CGA in all it's glory… It was beautiful!” I paid the extra money for the hard drive because I was told it would store everything I would ever need on one disk. So I laid out over $4,000 for a Tandy 1200, a straight XT type machine with a huge 10 Megabytes hard drive. To tell the truth, I had no idea what to do with it. I bought it to help in my insurance business. Rusty allegedly wrote down the BBS’s origin story at some point before the FBI raid in January 1993, and this entry has been preserved on BBS history websites and archives: Russell, who went by Rusty, was an insurance man he didn’t really intend to get into the pornography business, according to archived accounts that are attributed to him. Other BBS systems operators, or sysops, turned this into their entire business, charging annual subscription fees and placing ads for their BBSes in sex shops and magazines. ![]() If you were running a BBS at the time, and allowing people to upload their own files, you were likely hosting at least some porn. The dots are essential in creating the space between layers to create depth and allow light to pass through the empty spots. To attach the different design layers, it is recommended to use self-adhesive foam dots for some layers and a regular gluestick for others.
